Recently, under the leadership of Professor Wang Zhonglin, a research team from the Beijing Institute of Nano Energy and Systems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the U.S., developed a high-power two-dimensional planar triboelectric generator. This breakthrough technology has successfully demonstrated the ability to harvest mechanical energy from the environment and convert it into real-time power for conventional electronic devices. The new design offers a practical solution for self-powered portable electronics and introduces an innovative approach for large-scale mechanical energy collection. The findings were published in *Nature Communications* (DOI: 10.1038/ncomms4426).
The triboelectric effect occurs when two different materials come into contact and transfer charges. It is one of the most common natural phenomena. In 2012, Wang’s team pioneered the development of a transparent triboelectric generator using organic materials. It utilized the coupling of triboelectric charging and electrostatic induction to transform mechanical energy into electricity. Over the years, this type of device has been tested extensively, showing adaptability to various types of motion. However, low output current and limited power have remained key challenges in its practical application.
In their latest study, led by Dr. Zhu Guang and Ph.D. candidate Chen Jun, the team discovered that charge transfer between electrodes can be significantly enhanced through surface patterning during the sliding process. The amount of charge increases proportionally with pattern density. Based on this finding, they designed a patterned array structure, which resulted in a significant increase in the generator’s output power. The device features a planar circular stator and rotor, with a patterned surface made up of closely packed radial sectors. When the stator and rotor rotate relative to each other, the generator achieves an average output power of 1.5 watts, with a power density of 19 mW/cm² and an energy conversion efficiency of 24%.
The research team successfully demonstrated the generator’s ability to collect various forms of mechanical energy, such as air flow, water flow, and human movement. As a direct power source, it can continuously power everyday items like LED bulbs. By integrating the generator with power management circuits, the researchers developed a complete small power supply system. This system includes functions like impedance matching, rectification, energy storage, and voltage regulation, enabling stable DC output and real-time power or direct charging for common electronic devices, including smartphones.
Compared to traditional electromagnetic generators, the triboelectric generator offers several unique advantages due to its surface electrification mechanism. First, it is made from thin polymer films and electrode layers, making it lightweight and compact. Its energy density surpasses that of electromagnetic generators, making it ideal for powering small devices like wearable electronics or wireless sensors. Second, the materials used are widely available and cost-effective, and the simple fabrication process keeps production costs low, making the technology more accessible for mass application. Finally, the generator’s structure provides a novel way to capture mechanical energy from the sliding motion between two surfaces—an area where traditional generators fall short. Additionally, it has the potential to harness large-scale mechanical energy from nature, offering a promising new avenue for green energy solutions.
Industry experts have praised this groundbreaking technology, highlighting its high output, compact size, and low cost. They believe it provides a practical method for self-powered electronics by efficiently converting everyday mechanical energy. In regions without access to the power grid, this technology could enable people to generate enough energy from daily activities to light homes and charge mobile phones, opening new possibilities for sustainable living.
