At around 2 a.m. on April 13, a cargo ship carrying 40 containers was en route near the Pearl River Estuary when it collided with a sand boat on the southern side of Humen Bridge, close to the Guangzhou Port Channel. During the incident, three containers holding toluene diisocyanate (TDI), a highly toxic chemical, were damaged. One container was severely deformed, leading to a small amount of TDI leaking onto the deck. However, local authorities confirmed that there was no leakage into the sea, and no casualties were reported.
Environmental monitoring teams were quickly dispatched to the scene. According to the Shamen Town Humen Port, the air quality in the affected area is currently not polluted. The environmental protection agency is conducting ongoing tests to ensure the safety of the surrounding environment.
By around 4 p.m., emergency response vehicles, including fire trucks and environmental monitoring units, were still stationed at the site near Berths 5 and 6 of the Humen Port International Container Terminal. A container had fallen onto the dock, and several red barrels—believed to contain TDI—were scattered on the ground. The area was filled with a strong, pungent odor, prompting immediate action from the responding teams.
Sources at the terminal revealed that the containers originally held TDI and were damaged during the collision. They were urgently moved to the port for emergency handling. Workers involved in the cleanup noted that while protective gear was provided, it did not fully address the discomfort caused by the chemical fumes.
Song Lixin, deputy director of the Shatian Marine Department, confirmed that the ship had 40 containers, three of which contained TDI. The vessel had departed from Zhejiang and was making a stopover at Humen Port. Following the collision, the crew took immediate steps to plug the leak and prevent any contamination of the sea.
The maritime department coordinated with local authorities, including the Dongguan Maritime Safety Administration, Fire Protection, Environmental Protection, and Shatian Town Safety Supervision. They worked together to manage the situation, clear the area, and transfer the damaged containers to shore for further processing.
Firefighters from Humen Port used specialized equipment to clean up the leaked TDI. Most of the substance on the deck has been removed, and the owner is now arranging for the transport of undamaged containers. Under expert guidance, the fire department and ship crew are continuing to handle the damaged containers safely.
The Humen Port Environmental Protection Bureau confirmed that real-time monitoring of air and water quality showed no signs of pollution. Water samples from the accident site are also being tested to ensure long-term safety.
Toluene diisocyanate is a dangerous chemical that can cause severe health effects if inhaled. High concentrations can irritate the respiratory system, leading to conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and pulmonary edema. It is also known to be harmful to the eyes and skin.
