The "Xianzuo China Tour" has officially kicked off, with Chengdu as its first destination. The event took place at the Chengdu Bayi Autumn Art Auction, where the "Special Fairy for Mahogany Furniture and Crafts" auction stood out. This marked the debut of the "Fairy" furniture line in a water test auction, signaling a new chapter for the brand.
**"Fairy" Enters the Collector's Vision**
On December 23rd, the "Xian Zuo" mahogany furniture and handicrafts special auction was held in Chengdu. The auction featured a wide range of items, including chair and stool furniture, bed couches, cabinet furniture, table cases, and racks. Each piece reflected the traditional craftsmanship of Ming and Qing dynasty styles while showcasing the unique characteristics of the "Xianzuo" genre.
A total of 105 lots were presented, with 84 successfully sold, achieving an 81% turnover rate. The total sales reached 34.86 million yuan. Among the highlights was a seven-piece set of Vietnam Huanghuali dining table furniture, which fetched a top price of 3.3 million yuan.
He Jinchi, chairman of the CPPCC Xianyou County, emphasized that this auction was a significant milestone for "Xianzuo" furniture. As the country's renowned "Capital of Chinese Classical Craft Furniture," Xianyou is a key player in the production of high-end mahogany furniture, accounting for over 60% of the national premium market. This Chengdu tour marked the first time "Xianzuo" broke away from traditional exhibitions, presenting its craftsmanship and artistic value through a special auction format.
The Chengdu station of the "Xianzuo China Tour" was tailored to reflect the style and essence of the furniture. Through professional design and layout, it highlighted the elegance and beauty of traditional Chinese furniture. The goal was to guide consumers toward viewing high-end mahogany furniture not just as home furnishings but as art pieces, gradually shifting them toward luxury goods.
Xiao Desheng, director of the Redwood Professional Committee of the Sichuan Provincial Collectors Association, noted that the trial auction helped reposition high-end mahogany furniture, distinguishing it from mass-produced items and bringing it into the collector’s eye. This move significantly enhanced the image of "Xianzuo" and boosted its regional brand recognition.
**Rebranding the "Xianzuo" Image**
Despite being well-known in the industry, "Xianzuo" furniture had long relied on traditional business models such as "stores + distributors" or "brands + franchise stores." Many artisans wanted their works to be auctioned but lacked proper channels.
In November, during a market inspection led by the Xianyou County Arts and Crafts Bureau, "Xianzuo" partnered with Chengdu's Bayi Auction. The latter had previously hosted a successful contemporary mahogany furniture auction in 2011, and the collaboration quickly took shape. A selection of the finest "Xianzuo" pieces was then showcased at the Bayi Autumn Auction.
Sponsored by the Xianyou County Government and organized by multiple industry groups, the "Xianzuo China Tour" opened on December 19 after two months of planning. Lin Jing, director of Investment Promotion Operations at China Classical Crafts Expo City, stated that selecting "Xianzuo" furniture during a competitive market period greatly boosted confidence and reshaped its high-end image—setting a model worth promoting.
**Reviving Classical Furniture Traditions**
On the afternoon of December 19, a special forum on classical furniture inheritance and revival was held in Chengdu. Experts, including He Jinchi and Huang Fuhua, discussed the future of traditional Chinese furniture. Chen Baoguang, vice chairman of the China Furniture Association, revealed that Xianyou County had submitted an application to become the "China Xianzuo Redwood Furniture Industry Base."
Zhou Jingnan, an expert on Ming and Qing furniture at the Palace Museum, expressed his hopes for "Xianzuo" to play a vital role in the revival of traditional furniture, leaving a contemporary mark for future generations. The event not only celebrated the heritage of classical furniture but also laid the groundwork for its modern evolution.
