The national tour of the "Xianzuo China Tour" recently kicked off, with Chengdu as its first destination. At the Chengdu Bayi Autumn Art Auction, the "Special Fairy for Mahogany Furniture and Crafts" made a strong impression. This marked the debut of a water test auction specifically for "Fairy" furniture, an innovative step in the traditional craft market.
**"Fairy" Enters the Collector's Vision**
On December 23rd, the "Xian Zuo" mahogany furniture and handicrafts special auction took place in Chengdu. The auction featured a wide range of items, including chair and stool furniture, bed couches, cabinet furniture, table cases, and racks. Each piece reflected the traditional craftsmanship of Ming and Qing dynasty styles while showcasing the unique characteristics of the "Xianzuo" genre.
Out of 105 lots, 84 were successfully sold, achieving an 81% turnover rate, with a total transaction value reaching 34.86 million yuan. Among the highlights was a Vietnam Huanghuali single-board dining table set (seven pieces), which fetched a top price of 3.3 million yuan.
He Jinchi, chairman of the CPPCC Xianyou County, emphasized that this event was a crucial step for "Xianzuo" furniture. As the country's renowned "Capital of Chinese Classical Craft Furniture," Xianyou plays a vital role in the production of high-end mahogany furniture, accounting for over 60% of the national premium market. By participating in this auction, "Xianzuo" showcased not only its craftsmanship but also its artistic value, stepping beyond traditional exhibitions to reach new audiences.
The Chengdu station of the "Xianzuo China Tour" was specially designed to reflect the style and elegance of the furniture. Through thoughtful layout and presentation, it aimed to guide consumers toward viewing high-end mahogany furniture as both functional and artistic, gradually positioning it as a luxury item.
Xiao Desheng, director of the Redwood Professional Committee of the Sichuan Provincial Collectors Association, highlighted that the trial auction helped reposition high-end mahogany furniture, distinguishing it from mass-produced items and bringing it into the collector’s eye. This move is expected to significantly enhance the image of "Xianzuo" and elevate its regional brand status.
**Rebranding "Xianzuo"**
Despite being well-known in the industry, many "Xianzuo" artisans struggled to gain visibility due to limited channels. However, a collaboration between Xianyou County and Chengdu’s Bayi Auction Company changed that. Following a market inspection by the Xianyou Arts and Crafts Bureau, the two parties partnered to showcase a selection of high-quality "Xianzuo" furniture at the "Bayi Qiu Pai" event.
Sponsored by the Xianyou County Government and organized by several key industry players, the event opened on December 19 after nearly two months of planning. Lin Jing, director of investment promotion operations at China Classical Crafts Expo City, noted that the initiative brought confidence to the mahogany market during a tough period and reshaped the high-end image of "Xianzuo."
**Reviving Classical Furniture**
On the afternoon of December 19, an exclusive mahogany furniture forum was held in Chengdu. Experts discussed the importance of preserving and reviving classical furniture. He Jinchi and Huang Fuhua delivered speeches, followed by a panel discussion featuring leading figures such as Chen Baoguang from the China Furniture Association and Zhou Jingnan from the Palace Museum.
Zhou Jingnan expressed hope that "Xianzuo" would continue to innovate while honoring tradition, leaving a mark on the history of contemporary Chinese furniture. Meanwhile, Chen Baoguang revealed that Xianyou County has submitted an application to become the official "China Xianzuo Redwood Furniture Industry Base," signaling a new chapter in the region's legacy.
