Coal mining has undergone significant technological advancements over the decades. In the 1950s, operations were primarily semi-mechanized, relying on manual labor combined with basic machinery. By the 1980s, the industry had transitioned to comprehensive mechanization, marking a major shift in efficiency and safety. Today, fully mechanized coal mining systems are widely implemented, incorporating advanced equipment such as double (or single) drum shears, flexible scraper conveyors, and hydraulic self-moving supports. These technologies enable the entire process—from coal cutting and loading to transportation and support—to be fully automated, greatly improving productivity and reducing human exposure to hazardous conditions.

The double drum shearer is a key component in modern coal mining. It functions by using an electric motor to drive the spiral drums, which cut through the coal seam. The machine’s movement is controlled by a traction system that transfers power from the motor to the cutting unit. There are two main types of traction mechanisms: chain-based and chainless. In the case of chain traction, the sprocket on the traction unit engages with an anchor chain that is fixed along the conveyor. This system ensures stable and controlled movement of the shearer across the working face.

With continuous improvements in technology, coal mining operations have become more efficient, safer, and environmentally conscious. These developments not only enhance production but also contribute to the sustainability of the industry as it moves toward more advanced and intelligent mining solutions.
