Coal mining has come a long way since the 1950s, when operations were largely semi-mechanized. By the 1980s, the industry had transitioned to comprehensive mechanization, marking a major shift in efficiency and productivity. Today, modern coal mining relies on advanced equipment such as double (or single) drum shearing machines, flexible scraper conveyors, and hydraulic self-moving supports. These systems work together to automate key processes like coal cutting, loading, transportation, and support, making the entire mining face highly mechanized and efficient.

The double drum shearer is one of the most critical pieces of machinery in this process. It functions by using an electric motor that powers the spiral drums, which cut through the coal seam. The cutting action is facilitated by the reducer, which transfers power from the motor to the cutting head. Additionally, the machine's movement is controlled by another electric motor that drives the traction system. This allows the shearer to move along the working face smoothly and efficiently.

There are two primary types of traction systems used in these machines: anchor chain traction and anchorless chain traction. In the case of anchor chain traction, the sprocket on the traction unit engages with an anchor chain that is fixed to the conveyor. This provides a stable and reliable means of moving the shearer. On the other hand, anchorless systems use different mechanisms, often involving hydraulic or electric drives, to achieve similar results without the need for an external chain. Both methods have their advantages, depending on the specific conditions of the mine.
