The Australian government is taking a strong stance to protect its domestic manufacturing sector by establishing an anti-dumping committee. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to shield local industries from unfair foreign competition, particularly in the plastics sector. Over the past year, Australian Customs and Border Protection Authority in Canberra launched an investigation into PVC homopolymer resins imported from South Korea. At the same time, similar anti-dumping reviews were initiated against PVC products from Japan and the United States. These actions reflect growing concerns over the impact of dumped goods on local producers. In a recent statement, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that the government will allocate 24.4 million Australian dollars over the next four years to strengthen anti-dumping enforcement. She emphasized that foreign companies found deliberately evading these rules would face stricter penalties. The aim is to ensure fair trade practices and support domestic businesses. The government plans to introduce new legislation in 2013, which will establish an anti-dumping committee based in Melbourne. This body will handle complaints directly and report to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Gillard highlighted that nearly one million Australians are employed in manufacturing, and this vital sector is under pressure due to a weak European economy, rising global competition, and oversupply in some markets. She stressed that the surge in dumping is not only unfair but also threatens the sustainability of local industries. "It's unacceptable for our manufacturers to be undermined by cheap, unfairly priced imports," she said. So far, the Australian Plastics and Chemical Industry Association has not issued any official response to the new policy. However, industry experts suggest that while the measures may offer short-term relief, long-term solutions will require more comprehensive trade reforms and investment in innovation.
