Recently, the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced the findings from its "100-Home Decorative Materials and Free Indoor Air Testing" campaign. Out of 103 households tested, over 70% showed elevated levels of formaldehyde and TVOC (total volatile organic compounds), with the main bedroom, second bedroom, and children's room being the most affected areas. The results highlight a serious issue: indoor air pollution remains a hidden danger that shouldn't be ignored. Many people are wondering—how long should you ventilate after renovation to ensure safety? Last night, an environmental lecture titled “Green, Low-Carbon Life†was held by the Evening Paper, where environmental experts and directors from the Ju’uan Environmental Protection Consulting Center shared their insights live, offering valuable knowledge to the public.
Case 1: A Leukemia Family’s Home Had Severe Indoor Pollution
Among those tested was Ms. Duan, whose 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia last year. The air quality in her home was alarming—formaldehyde levels were 2.4 times higher than the standard, and TVOC levels exceeded by 1.6 times. Notably, her house had been renovated and occupied for nine years. According to reports, among five families with children suffering from leukemia, all had indoor air quality that exceeded the limits. This case serves as a stark reminder of the long-term risks of indoor pollution.
According to officials at the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, even newly renovated homes often have poor indoor air quality, with bedrooms being particularly problematic. People are more vulnerable to pollution while sleeping, as they spend more time indoors and may not notice symptoms immediately.
Expert Advice
According to a report from Beijing media, nine out of ten children admitted to hospitals in a single year had lived in homes that were renovated within the past six months. Experts explain that indoor pollutants can take anywhere from 3 to 15 years to naturally dissipate. Today, many people use formaldehyde test kits available on the market for self-testing. If pollution is detected, ozone machines can help reduce it effectively.
However, environmental experts caution that ozone should be used correctly. For example, 1 kg of water needs 1 minute, meat processing takes 10–15 minutes, children’s toys require 20 minutes, cutting boards need 15–20 minutes, vegetables and fruits should be treated for 5–10 minutes, wardrobes and shoes need 20 minutes, and newly renovated rooms should be treated continuously for 5–7 days, with one cycle every 20 square meters. It is essential to close doors during the treatment to maximize effectiveness.
Case 2: 11 Types of Vegetables Are Most Susceptible to Pesticide Contamination
According to Di Yulong, vegetables such as leeks, cabbage, rape, leafy greens, mustard, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cucumber, green beans, and sage are most likely to be contaminated with pesticides. While washing with water, rice water, or salt water can only remove about 15% of pesticide residues, peeling the vegetables can eliminate all surface contamination. Using fruit and vegetable cleaning agents can remove up to 87% of the residues, making them a much more effective option.
Decorative Materials and Indoor Air
This image highlights the ongoing problem of indoor air pollution, even in homes that have been renovated years ago. As awareness grows, more people are taking steps to protect their health by testing air quality and using safe cleaning methods. Whether through proper ventilation, ozone treatment, or careful food preparation, the goal is to create a safer, healthier living environment.
