Our very first Waterstone Design Contest has concluded, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the outstanding winner in the Contemporary Kitchen category, By Design Interiors, Inc. Their design, blending opulent luxury with a modern farmhouse twist, has earned the nickname “Chanel Chic.†Cara Fox, principal designer at the Fox Group and one of our contest judges, praised the space for its “stunning wow factor,†highlighting the gorgeous statement marble that brings both personality and beauty to the room. She also noted how the brass accents and modern lighting beautifully refresh the entire area.
We had the chance to chat with the talented team at By Design Interiors about how they managed to infuse such a glamorous touch into this award-winning contemporary kitchen.
**1. Starting with a dynamic mix of colors and materials must be quite a challenge. Where do you usually begin?"**
For this 'Chanel Chic Kitchen,' our designer aimed to revamp the home in a way that perfectly reflected the homeowner's fabulous and chic personal style. As a high-profile professional, she desired a dramatic space in the heart of her home for hosting guests. Together, we crafted a sleek, black, white, and gold sanctuary that commands attention the moment you step inside.

**2. Does this kitchen reflect your typical style, or is it something entirely unique compared to your other projects?"**
By Design Interiors is a hub where skilled designers collaborate with clients to create uniquely tailored interior spaces. While our designers can adapt to various styles, there are certain aesthetics we naturally gravitate toward. For this project, we focused on showcasing the homeowner’s love for glamour alongside modern farmhouse touches. We blended bold black, white, and gold tones with pops of turquoise, durable surfaces like shiplap on the grand island, and exposed beams reminiscent of the great room. Our approach involved an interactive process with the homeowner, starting with discussions about inspiration images and understanding her personal style. From there, we moved forward with the selection process.
Early in the design phase, the plumbing fixtures were chosen. This allowed us to explore questions like: What metal finishes do they prefer? Are they leaning towards modern or traditional styles? Curved or straight lines? Would they embrace mixed metal finishes? Do they enjoy cooking or entertaining? Once plumbing and appliances were settled, the design team could proceed with numerous other selections while maintaining consistency in shape, finish, and style throughout the space.

**3. There are countless eye-catching elements in this kitchen. Which one stands out as your favorite?"**
It’s tough to pick just one! We adore how this kitchen truly captures the homeowner’s essence—from the gold vent hood to the black tiles and the striking Cambria quartz waterfall-edge island. However, the island is undoubtedly the focal point. It was the homeowner’s favorite selection, drawing everyone’s eyes immediately upon entering the room. The matte black sleek Waterstone faucet pairs perfectly with it.
**4. What kind of atmosphere does the black, white, and gold combination create in this space?"**
This combination exudes drama. The homeowner wanted her kitchen to make a bold statement for her guests. She loves to entertain and desired a space with a ‘wow-factor’ for everyone who enters. The stark contrast of white cabinets, black backsplash, and gold vent hood creates pure drama! At the same time, it remains functional through the use of high-quality appliances and durable materials like quartz and porcelain.
**5. It seems as though the room was designed around the Waterstone PLP faucet. What drew you to this faucet and finish specifically?"**
The matte black and brass Waterstone Pull-Down faucet complements the island design beautifully, adding an edgy industrial touch to the glamorous quartz countertop.
**6. What do you think is the most crucial aspect of designing a kitchen?"**
Designing a kitchen that meets the homeowner’s functionality needs is key. This starts by gathering inspiration, listening, and understanding their preferences, lifestyle, and how they intend to use their home. We consider factors like whether they enjoy cooking, entertaining, or pursuing hobbies. Understanding their daily routines within the space helps us create an optimal workflow and select items that suit their needs and style. Our goal is to craft spaces that feel authentic to the client. Ideally, anyone walking into a client’s space should say, “This feels just like them!â€
For the Chanel Chic Kitchen, we emphasized showcasing the homeowner’s personal style by integrating glitz and glamour with a striking black, white, and gold color palette, complemented by gold bamboo-look pendants, bold hardware, and decorative brass details on the apron-front sink, Waterstone faucet, and JennAir range.
The hard surfaces were chosen to accommodate the homeowner’s active lifestyle—a successful professional with a passion for dogs—ensuring each surface is easy to clean, puppy-proof, yet luxurious. The Cambria Quartz island top in the Bentley design was the centerpiece, guiding every selection and detail in the space. Its dynamic black and white veining, combined with the waterfall edge, is enhanced by a glossy black chevron backsplash, chic black and white cabinetry, and a gold-leafed custom vent hood. Instead of a standard door, a custom-designed ‘Greek-key’-inspired swinging door leads into the working pantry. Subtle white shiplap panels line the back of the island for added durability when seated at this grand island.

**7. It appears the owners will cherish this space for years to come. How do you strike a balance between bold designs and ensuring they remain timeless?"**
We balance boldness with functionality by getting to know our clients and ensuring the selections and designs will not only look stunning now but remain appealing over time. This involves choosing durable materials and sticking to a neutral base—like black and white—then adding elegance with refined finishes, decorative fixtures, and bold textures and prints. The gold vent hood, bamboo pendants, and Cambria quartz island bring unexpected drama to the space without overwhelming the home or appearing overly trendy. This blend of modernity and glamour ensures the homeowner will enjoy the space for many years to come.
