How to carry celery seedlings

Celery thrives in cool and humid conditions, with a moderate level of cold tolerance. Its optimal growth temperature ranges from 15°C to 20°C. While the seedling stage is more resilient to high temperatures, the seeds begin to germinate at as low as 4°C. However, germination is slower under higher temperatures. In addition, celery seeds require adequate moisture and some light to successfully germinate. Celery can be planted throughout the year depending on the region. For example, in Hangzhou, planting times vary: mid-June to August for early seedlings, and late January to February for later plantings. Seedlings are typically raised for 1-2 months, with approximately 250 grams per mu (about 0.067 hectares) using plastic film covering. The seedlings are around 50-60 days old. From mid-June to July, seedlings are planted at a rate of about 0.5 kg per mu, using shade nets, with a seedling age of 40-50 days. In August, seedlings are also planted at 250 grams per mu, again using shade nets, with an age of around 50 days. Due to the small size and thick outer layer of celery seeds (which are actually fruits), they have poor water permeability and weak emergence ability. Therefore, proper pre-sowing treatment is essential to speed up germination. The process usually involves soaking the seeds for 12-14 hours, rinsing them thoroughly, manually rubbing to remove the outer skin, drying the surface, and then germinating them at 20-22°C until 50% of the seeds have sprouted. Before planting, it's important to water the bottom of the bed and provide shade and protection from rain during hot seasons. After planting, the soil should remain moist for 7-14 days after the first sprouts appear. When the seedlings develop 4-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted. Because celery takes time to emerge, weeds often appear in the seedbed. It's recommended to remove weeds when the seedlings have 1-2 true leaves to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
