Part 1: Construction Has Its Tricks
Home decoration is a crucial part of any renovation project, especially when it comes to wall finishes. If walls are not properly handled, it can lead to long-term regrets and unsatisfactory results. Unfortunately, cutting corners during the wall decoration process is quite common. As an owner, it's essential to stay involved and ensure everything is done right to avoid future issues.
Regret 1: Poor Paint Application
Latex paint is one of the most commonly used materials for wall finishes today. It can be applied by brushing, rolling, or spraying. However, if the workers are careless or unprofessional, color inconsistencies may occur—especially with darker shades of emulsion paint. These small differences can be very noticeable and hard to fix later on.
To prevent this, make sure the latex paint is properly diluted with water before use and that the same batch is used throughout the project. If repairs are needed after the job, it’s best to repaint the entire wall to maintain a uniform look.
Regret 2: Poor Tile Adhesion
Another common mistake is improper adhesion of tiles. This often happens when workers rush the process, leading to problems like hollow tiles, missing grout lines, or using incorrect cement and adhesive ratios. These issues can cause tiles to crack or fall off over time.
According to the "Quality Acceptance Criteria for Family Room Decoration Projects" issued by the Beijing Municipal Construction Committee, tiles should be firmly attached, with even joints, no cracks, and minimal empty spots (no more than 5% of the total area). Always check these details during inspections.
Regret 3: Improper Wall Grooving
Before installing pipes, grooves must be made in the walls and floors. Some workers, however, cut corners by making rough or unsafe grooves, which can damage the building’s load-bearing structure or nearby utilities. This is a serious issue that can lead to costly repairs down the line.
Before construction begins, confirm the pipeline layout with your contractor. Different types of walls have different requirements—load-bearing walls should never be grooved, and walls with insulation layers may crack if grooved improperly. Be careful with floor grooving too, to avoid damaging the floor slab and causing problems for neighbors below.
Regret 4: Poor Joint Finishing
Another frequent problem occurs at the joints between walls and doors/windows, as well as where two different paint colors meet. Workers often neglect these areas, resulting in messy transitions, mixed paints, and visible seams.
To avoid this, supervise the work closely. When applying two different paint colors, use masking tape along the edge of the first color, then apply the second color on top. Once the paint dries, carefully remove the tape to achieve a clean, sharp line.
