Creating "invisibility clothing" that achieves true invisibility has long been a dream for scientists, engineers, and tech enthusiasts. Researchers led by Professor Chen Hongsheng from Zhejiang University are currently exploring the mechanisms and experimental possibilities of electromagnetic wave "stealth clothing." While current technology still faces challenges, they believe that electromagnetic stealth could be the key to bringing real-life invisibility into practical use.
When an electromagnetic wave—such as light—hits an object, it scatters in various directions. This scattered wave is what allows us to detect the presence of an object. The idea behind stealth technology is to guide these waves around the object, making it appear invisible. Based on this principle, Professor Chen's team is working on innovative methods to achieve such effects.
The research group has proposed a design for "invisibility clothing" that operates in the visible light spectrum using a polygonal structure. This method theoretically enables stealth from all angles. In their experiments, they developed a hexagonal columnar "invisibility cloak" capable of functioning across the entire optical range. Additionally, they have created a cylindrical stealth device that works in the microwave frequency range.
In one experiment, when a pencil was placed inside the device, the middle part appeared "missing," yet the background pattern remained visible, demonstrating the device’s effectiveness. Another image shows the research team, including Professor Chen Hongsheng and Dr. Zheng Bin, organizing and testing their stealth device.
A third image illustrates the "invisible" device in action: a beam of light bends within the device but continues in its original direction after passing through it. These developments mark significant progress toward the realization of practical invisibility technology. As research continues, the possibility of everyday applications becomes more tangible, opening new frontiers in both science and technology.
