Zhejiang University Research and Development Hexagonal Column "Invisible Clothes"

Creating "invisibility clothing" that can achieve true invisibility has long been a dream for scientists, engineers, and tech enthusiasts. Researchers led by Professor Chen Hongsheng from Zhejiang University are currently exploring the mechanisms and experimental possibilities of electromagnetic wave "stealth clothing." They believe that while current technology still faces challenges, electromagnetic stealth could soon become a breakthrough, bringing real-world applications of invisibility into everyday life. When an electromagnetic wave—such as light—hits an object, it scatters in different directions. This scattered wave is what allows us to detect the presence of an object. The idea behind stealth technology is to manipulate these waves so that they do not reflect back. Instead, if the wave can be guided "around" the object, it would effectively make the object invisible. This concept forms the basis of the research conducted by Chen Hongsheng's team. The team has developed a design method for "invisibility clothing" in the visible light spectrum, using polygonal structures that theoretically allow for 360-degree stealth. In their experiments, they created a hexagonal columnar device capable of operating across the entire optical band. Additionally, they have produced a cylindrical stealth device for microwave frequencies. One of the most intriguing demonstrations involved placing a pencil inside the device. The middle part of the pencil appeared "missing," yet the background pattern remained visible, suggesting that the light was being manipulated around the object. Another image shows the research team, including Professor Chen Hongsheng and Dr. Zheng Bin, working on the device. A third image demonstrates how light bends within the device but continues in its original direction after passing through, visually proving the concept of wave redirection. These developments mark significant progress in the field of metamaterials and cloaking technology, offering a glimpse into a future where invisibility might no longer be science fiction.
