Exhaust Fan Guide: Understanding Types and Ventilation Methods
Classification of Exhaust Fans
Exhaust fans can be categorized based on their installation and airflow direction. There are several types, including wall-mounted fans, duct exhaust fans, duct intake fans, and fully ducted systems. A wall-mounted fan operates by drawing air from one side of a partition wall and expelling it to the other. Duct exhaust fans take in air from an open space and push it out through a duct, while duct intake fans draw air through a duct and release it into an open area. Fully ducted fans have both sides connected via ducts, allowing for controlled air intake and exhaust.
Based on airflow patterns, fans are also classified as centrifugal, axial, or cross-flow. Centrifugal fans pull air in parallel to the motor shaft and expel it perpendicular to it. Axial fans move air in the same direction as the rotation axis, making them ideal for high-volume, low-pressure applications. Cross-flow fans feature an impeller that moves air perpendicular to the rotation axis, often used in compact ventilation systems.
Ventilation Methods
There are three main ventilation methods: exhaust-only, intake-only, and balanced ventilation. In exhaust-only mode, the fan removes stale air from a room through a natural air inlet, while fresh air enters through windows or vents. In intake-only mode, the fan pulls in fresh air through its intake and pushes the dirty air out naturally. Balanced ventilation uses the fan to both draw in and expel air, ensuring even air exchange and better indoor air quality.
The amount of air exchanged per hour is known as the air change rate, while the required ventilation is the volume of fresh air needed per person or per square meter. These factors vary depending on the room's purpose and size. Proper ventilation is essential for maintaining comfort, reducing humidity, and improving overall air quality in residential and commercial spaces.
Structure of a Basic Exhaust Fan
The most common type of exhaust fan is the shutter-style model. It typically includes an electric motor, blades, a housing, a panel, a shutter, and a switch. The motor is usually a single-phase capacitor-run asynchronous motor, while smaller units may use shaded-pole motors. Blades are commonly made from ABS or AS plastic, offering durability and lightweight performance. The housing is often constructed from stamped and welded sheet metal, though some models use injection-molded plastic. Panels and shutters are generally made from steel or tinplate, providing structural support and airflow control.
