Common types of plasterboard

Gypsum board comes in various types, each designed for different applications and environmental conditions. Here are the four most common varieties you'll find in the market:

Ordinary Gypsum Board

This is the most economical and widely used type, featuring a white core and gray paper. It's ideal for general interior use where there are no special requirements. It works best in areas with continuous relative humidity not exceeding 65%. Many people choose 9.5mm thick plain gypsum board for ceilings or partitions due to its affordability. However, it’s thinner and less durable, making it prone to warping in humid environments. For better performance, especially in high-humidity areas, it's recommended to go with 12mm or thicker boards. Thicker sheets also help reduce the risk of joint cracking.

Water-Resistant Gypsum Board

Designed for areas with higher moisture levels, this type has a water-resistant core and facing paper. According to national standards, the surface water absorption should be no more than 160g/m², and the water absorption rate should not exceed 10%. It's suitable for spaces like bathrooms and kitchens, where humidity can be high (up to 95% relative humidity). This makes it a better choice for wet areas compared to standard gypsum board.

Fire-Resistant Gypsum Board

Also known as fire-rated gypsum board, it contains fire-retardant materials and often includes glass fiber reinforcement. When cut, you can see the glass fibers within the core. High-quality versions use non-alkali glass fiber, which provides better fire resistance. Lower quality products may use medium or high-alkali glass fiber, which is less effective in fire situations. Fire-resistant gypsum board is commonly used in areas where fire safety is a priority, such as commercial buildings or around heat sources.

Mold-Resistant Gypsum Board

This type offers enhanced resistance to moisture and mold, making it ideal for areas with fluctuating humidity levels, such as basements or coastal regions. Its surface has a low water absorption rate, typically under 160g/m². It’s often used for ceilings, walls, and veneer applications in environments where moisture is a concern. Mold-resistant boards help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, improving indoor air quality and the longevity of your construction.
