Xiamen has realized BRT real-time security monitoring

On May 6, during the Fujian and Xiamen People's Political Consultative Conference, a proposal titled "Proposal to Strengthen Public Transportation Safety in the City" was discussed. It was revealed that this year, Xiamen is set to introduce the "Measures for Public Security Management of Public Transportation in Xiamen." This initiative aims to regulate safety protocols for public transport companies, passengers, and staff, clearly defining the responsibilities of all parties involved in ensuring transportation security. Lu Shigang, a member of the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Lin Rui, Director of the Xiamen Municipal Public Security Bureau, were present at the meeting. Their participation highlights the importance of the proposal and the commitment of local authorities to enhance public transport safety. One of the key aspects of the new regulation is the implementation of real-time monitoring systems for public transportation. Specifically, Xiamen’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has already begun to adopt advanced technologies to enable real-time security monitoring across the entire BRT network. This move marks a significant step forward in improving passenger safety and emergency response capabilities. Under the proposed measures, bus operators, taxi companies, ferry services, and station managers will be required to register with the public security agencies. This process will help establish a more structured approach to managing public transport security and ensure accountability. Currently, the Municipal Public Security Bureau is gathering feedback from relevant departments and working on refining the draft regulations. The goal is to submit the final version to the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Legal Affairs by September this year for review and potential implementation. In addition to technological upgrades, the city is also focusing on education and training for public transport workers and the general public. The Public Security Traffic Branch has completed the first phase of its intelligent security monitoring and command center project, which now allows for real-time monitoring of the entire BRT line. Looking ahead, Xiamen plans to expand these security monitoring facilities to major public transport hubs, including train stations, bus terminals, and ferry ports, to create a safer and more secure environment for commuters. This comprehensive approach reflects the city’s growing emphasis on integrating technology, policy, and human resources to build a more resilient and efficient public transportation system.
