In a groundbreaking development, an Israeli startup named StoreDot has unveiled a revolutionary charging technology that can fully charge a smartphone in just 30 seconds. This innovation promises to drastically cut down the time needed to power up devices—laptops could be charged in mere minutes instead of hours. Despite the impressive speed, the company remains tight-lipped about the exact technical details behind this breakthrough.
StoreDot, which was once part of the Nanotechnology Department at Tel Aviv University, originally developed this technology for the Samsung Galaxy 4. The company first showcased its invention at the Microsoft Think Next conference in Tel Aviv. Looking ahead, StoreDot aims to expand its charger technology to other smartphones as well. Their research focuses on biological semiconductors made from naturally occurring organic compounds called peptides—short chains of amino acids that are essential building blocks of proteins. This unique approach allows for faster and more efficient charging.
The current prototype of the StoreDot charger is roughly the size of a standard laptop charger. However, the company is actively working on miniaturizing the device through advanced engineering. While the price might be twice that of a regular phone charger (around $30), the company plans to bring it to market by the end of 2016. Dr. Doron Meyerdorf, CEO of StoreDot, stated, “Our innovative nanotechnology, inspired by nature, has the potential to redefine how we use mobile devices.â€
In 2013, the company secured $6 million in funding, which not only provided financial support but also demonstrated investor confidence in their use of synthetic bio-nano materials. According to Meyerdorf, this technology could revolutionize the next generation of mobile devices. The core of their innovation lies in Nanodot, or Bio-Organic Nanocrystals, which are self-assembled using natural biological mechanisms. This makes the production process more cost-effective and eco-friendly, as they can be derived from abundant organic materials.
