According to the Taiwan Machine Tool Development Foundation, among the 82 types of metalworking machine tools imported from China, German products hold the largest market share in 26 categories. These include 19 types of metal cutting machines and 7 types of forming machines. Last year, China's imports of laser processing equipment reached $270 million, showing a 47.7% year-on-year increase, and accounted for 34.2% of the total. Meanwhile, ultrasonic processing equipment imports surged by 122.1%, with a market share of 38.5%. On the other hand, imports of electrochemical and electron beam processing tools declined by 41.1%, holding 24.9% of the market.
In terms of machining centers and combined machine tools, Germany remained a key supplier. Imports of machining centers for processed metals increased by 34.0%, with a market share of 47.8%. Single-station combined machine tools saw a massive 442.3% rise, reaching 62.3% of the market. Multi-station combined machine tools also grew by 44.6%, capturing 38.3% of the market.
For lathes, imports of other CNC lathes from Germany dropped slightly by 0.7%, with a 27.4% market share. However, imports of other lathes rose sharply by 603.3%, reaching 36.7%.
Regarding drilling, boring, and milling machines, German imports of linear mobile power head drilling machines fell by 45.4%, but still held 52.1% of the market. CNC boring machines decreased by 37.9%, with a 34.9% share, while other CNC milling machines increased by 51.9%, accounting for 42.0%.
In the grinding machine sector, Germany maintained strong positions. In 2012, German CNC cylindrical grinders, internal grinders, non-CNC roll grinders, other grinders, CNC sharpening tools, and honing machines had market shares of 30.9%, 49.1%, 40.7%, 29.3%, 31.4%, and 43.4%, respectively.
Germany also dominated the planer and gear-cutting machine markets, with shares of 54.0% and 55.8%. In the forming machine tool category, German CNC straightening machines held a 64.3% market share, while non-CNC models captured 51.4%. German products also led in CNC cutting and shearing machines, with shares of 27.8% and 21.5%, respectively. In metal profile extrusion machines, German products occupied 47.0% of the market.
Finally, in wire processing and non-cutting machine tools, German products remained highly competitive, with market shares of 31.3% and 24.6% respectively.
