On August 28, the second class of the Zhengzhou-Europe international rail freight train successfully departed from Zhengzhou, following the successful launch of the first class. This milestone marks a significant step toward the normalization of the Asia-Europe logistics corridor, reinforcing the role of Zhengzhou as a key player in cross-border trade and transportation. The route has now become a reliable and efficient channel for goods moving between China and Europe.
More than a month ago, the first train completed its journey of 10,214 kilometers in just 15 days, rekindling the spirit of the ancient Silk Road and boosting confidence among customers. The second train carried 41 containers filled with high-end clothing, luxury shoes, leather goods, auto parts, electronics, handicrafts, and molds—many of which came from provinces like Henan, Shandong, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Guangdong. These goods will pass through five countries and arrive in Germany after 16 days of transit.
According to officials from Zhengzhou International Logistics Development and Construction Co., Ltd., the second class offers faster delivery, higher quality, and a wider variety of products compared to the first. High-value goods are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for this route. The regular operation of these trains is expected to strengthen economic and trade cooperation between the Central Plains Economic Zone and countries along the Eurasian Continental Bridge, enhancing Henan’s position as an open and dynamic region.
With plans to operate 13 shifts this year and over 50 by 2014, the Zhengzhou-Europe rail freight service is gaining momentum. Zhang Chunxi, deputy director of the Economic Development Zone Management Committee, highlighted that the service helps reduce costs, improve efficiency, and speed up capital turnover. It also facilitates the import of high-tech machinery, vehicles, medical equipment, and engineering tools into the Central Plains area.
The second train was fully loaded, with no empty cars—following international standards for multimodal transport. The cargo includes not only items from Henan but also from other provinces, showcasing the growing regional collaboration. The EU remains one of Henan’s most important trading partners, with total imports and exports reaching $1.82 billion and $6.6 billion respectively in 2013, reflecting strong growth.
High-quality products such as Zhengzhou-made cars, premium footwear, abrasives, and textiles are well-received in European markets. With government support and positive feedback from the initial shipments, the railway freight model is gaining credibility. If it continues to mature, it could revolutionize how Henan's goods reach Europe, reducing reliance on sea routes through Qingdao and Lianyungang, and addressing the limitations of traditional maritime transport.
