Carnation, also known as the clove pink, is a perennial herb renowned for its beautiful and fragrant flowers. It has a long blooming period and is one of the most important cut flowers globally, cultivated in many countries around the world. **Classification of Carnations** Carnations come in various types. Based on color, they can be categorized into red, purple, and pink varieties, with some displaying mixed colors. They can also be classified by flower size and number: large-flowered carnations and loose-branching varieties.  **Environmental Requirements for Carnations** 1. **Light**: Carnations thrive in full sun. While they don't require shade during nursery or flowering stages, supplemental lighting can enhance bloom size and color vibrancy. Light intensity directly affects the yield of cut flowers per unit area. 2. **Temperature**: Carnations prefer cooler conditions and can tolerate low temperatures but struggle in extreme heat. If summer temperatures exceed 35°C or winter drops below 9°C, growth may slow or stop. Proper cooling in summer and insulation in winter are essential. 3. **Moisture**: These plants have fibrous roots, so overwatering or high humidity can harm them. Drip irrigation is recommended, along with attention to water quality and salt content. 4. **Soil**: Well-draining, fertile soil with good aeration is ideal. The optimal pH range is 5.6–6.4. Soil texture plays a more significant role than organic matter content in determining flowering performance. **Propagation Methods of Carnations** Carnations can be propagated through sexual or asexual methods. However, sexual propagation is rarely used due to low seed yield, genetic variation, and slow growth. Asexual propagation, particularly cutting, is widely used in commercial production because it ensures consistent traits and faster results. 1. **Establishment of a Mother Plant Garden**: A dedicated mother plant garden is crucial for producing high-quality seedlings. The mother plants must be young, healthy, and free from disease. They should be kept below the sixth node to ensure optimal growth. 2. **Cutting Techniques**: - **Selection of Cuttings**: Choose healthy stems with 3–4 pairs of unfolded leaves and one unexpanded pair. The flower bud rate should be under 10%. - **Timing**: Avoid cutting during the hottest months (July–August). Use clean, high-quality materials and perlite for better rooting. - **Cutting Process**: Harvest cuttings when the plant starts growing. Use hands instead of scissors to avoid cross-contamination. Ensure the base has a small trunk layer without damaging the parent branch. Keep 4–5 top leaves and remove the lower ones. Soak cuttings in water for 30 minutes before treatment with a growth regulator. - **Storage**: Store cuttings at 1–2°C, slightly dehydrated, and use thin plastic packaging to maintain quality for year-round propagation. - **Management**: Use intermittent misting systems to keep the leaves moist without over-saturating the soil. After roots reach 1 cm, transplant carefully, keeping root damage to a minimum. By following these steps, growers can successfully propagate carnations, ensuring healthy, uniform seedlings and high-quality blooms.
