Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) subsidiary TSMC Solar recently announced on the 31st that its advanced facility in Taichung has successfully developed a CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) module with an area of 1.09 square meters and a record-breaking conversion efficiency of 15.1%. This achievement was made using existing manufacturing equipment and materials, showcasing TSMC's technological prowess. The efficiency level has been independently verified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and TUV SUD, marking a global milestone in one-piece thin-film large-area solar modules.
According to Zhao Yingcheng, general manager of TSMC Solar, the company has made remarkable progress in just over a year, with the module's conversion efficiency now closely matching that of mainstream silicon-based technologies. This highlights TSMC's strong technical standards and continuous innovation. The competitive edge of TSMC's CIGS technology lies in its ability to enhance energy conversion efficiency, along with superior high-temperature performance and a cost-effective structure.
Stephen McKenery, CEO of Global Sales at TSMC Solar, noted that customers are highly satisfied with the ongoing improvements in their module performance. In particular, TSMC’s CIGS series products continue to deliver up to 5% more power output in high-temperature environments compared to conventional commercial modules. This makes TSMC’s solar solutions especially appealing for regions with extreme weather conditions.
With this breakthrough, TSMC is positioning itself as a key player in the next generation of photovoltaic technologies, leveraging its expertise in semiconductor manufacturing to drive advancements in renewable energy.
