Simply placing a finger on the scanner, the system automatically captured the unique vein pattern in under 30 seconds. Then, when the same finger was placed again, the door unlocked instantly, proving the system’s fast and accurate authentication process.
Recently, the Digital Video Research Group at the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, National University of Defense Technology, has spent over a decade developing a finger vein recognition and authentication system. This technology boasts an extremely low false acceptance rate—just one in 100,000—and has secured five national invention patents. This breakthrough has effectively broken the previous monopoly held by countries like Japan and South Korea. The team is currently fine-tuning the system and aims to launch it commercially after the Spring Festival.
According to Xie Jianbin, the project leader, vein recognition is a relatively new biometric technology that offers significant advantages over traditional fingerprint scanning. It works by capturing the unique patterns of blood vessels under specific lighting conditions, making it a true "live detection" method. Not only does this provide high security, but it also opens up broader application possibilities in various fields.
In addition, researchers have been working on reducing the size of the device to enhance its usability. During the visit, the reporter noticed that the entire unit is just about 6 cm tall—roughly the size of a computer mouse—making it highly portable and convenient for everyday use.
Xie Jianbin shared that the next phase of the research will focus on two key areas: improving the system's ability to detect veins under low-visibility conditions and enhancing the accuracy of identification when fingers are bent or rotated. These upgrades aim to make the technology even more reliable and versatile for real-world applications.
