At present, we are in the critical period of preparing and sowing cotton across China. Since late March, planting activities have begun nationwide. On March 11th, I had the opportunity to participate in an interview with the Central People’s Broadcasting Station, Voice of China Rural, and Dr. Agriculture Online. The interview has now been compiled for your reference.
First, what are the main climatic conditions in different cotton-growing regions of China?
China's commercial cotton areas are generally divided into four regions: the Yangtze River Basin, the Yellow River Basin, the Northwest Inland, and the Liaohe River Basin. Among these, the Liaohe region accounts for a smaller proportion. Each area experiences different spring weather patterns, which influence planting strategies.
In the Yangtze River Basin, spring is typically wet, humid, and cool with limited sunlight. The primary challenges include seedling rot caused by low temperatures and high humidity, as well as prolonged rain leading to weak seedlings and even plant death.
The Yellow River Basin, on the other hand, experiences dry and warm springs with rapid temperature increases and more sunshine. Drought is a major concern, often referred to as “spring rain is as precious as oil.†Farmers must prepare irrigation systems before sowing, and cold waves can still cause damage. Wind is also common, which may lift mulch and expose young plants.
In the Northwest Inland, where desert oasis agriculture is prevalent, irrigation is essential. Spring brings quick temperature rises but large daily temperature fluctuations. Cold waves and freezing events are common, along with strong winds and dust storms that can disrupt mulch coverage.
Second, what are the key steps in preparing for cotton cultivation, and how do they differ between regions?
Currently, during the preparation phase, the following steps are crucial:
1. **Seed Preparation**: The amount of seeds used depends on planting density and precision. For example, in the Yangtze River Basin, lower planting density requires 0.3–0.4 kg per mu, while the Yellow River Basin uses about 2 kg per mu. In the Northwest, high-density planting may require up to 2–3 kg per mu. Farmers usually purchase 10% extra seeds to account for replanting needs. Seed treatment is also important to enhance germination and emergence.
2. **Resource Preparation**: This includes fertilizers, mulch, agricultural films, pesticides, herbicides, and drip irrigation systems.
3. **Equipment Maintenance**: Agricultural machinery, wells, ditches, and canals need regular maintenance to ensure smooth operations.
4. **Regional Differences**: The Yangtze River Basin focuses on seedling transplanting, using light and simple methods. The Yellow River Basin promotes grass film removal, while the Northwest emphasizes wide film coverage.
Third, how should farmers choose their cotton varieties?
As the saying goes, "good seedlings make half the crop." Selecting high-quality varieties and seeds is essential. Farmers should look for certified varieties, preferably those recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture. These varieties offer higher yields, stability, and disease resistance. It's also advisable to purchase from reputable companies and choose coated seeds, which contain fungicides and insecticides to protect against pests and diseases.
Fourth, how to achieve a full stand of cotton?
A strong start is crucial. After preparing the seeds, the following measures are essential:
1. **Soil Preparation**: Irrigation amounts vary by region—60 cubic meters per mu in the Yellow River Basin and 80–100 in the Northwest. Soil should be well-prepared, free of debris, and residual plastic films removed.
2. **Sowing Timing**: Sowing should occur when the 5 cm soil temperature stabilizes at 12°C and rises quickly to 14°C. Early sowing can help avoid cold spells.
3. **Sowing Techniques**: Depth is typically 2–3 cm, depending on soil type. Proper spacing and continuous seeding are necessary to avoid gaps.
4. **Post-Sowing Care**: Mulch protection, timely thinning, weeding, and pest control are all critical to ensuring healthy growth.
5. **Transplanting Seedlings**: In the Yangtze and Yellow River Basins, light and simple seedling techniques are commonly used. Seedbeds should be nutrient-rich, and transplants should be done carefully.
Finally, the Ministry of Agriculture has selected seven key technologies to improve productivity. These include light and simple seedling methods, slow-release fertilizers, anti-predation cotton, and drip irrigation under film, tailored to regional needs.
