A research group at Pohang University of Science and Technology has developed an electrode material that can charge lithium-ion batteries to 75% by synthesizing and applying porous inorganic materials in 6 minutes.

Pohang University of Science and Technology announced that a research group led by Professor Li Jinyu of the Department of Chemical Engineering has developed an electrode material that can be used to synthesize hierarchical porous inorganic materials in a simple manner for lithium-ion batteries.

The pores of a substance are classified into micropores (2 nanometers or less), mesopores (2-50 nanometers) and macropores (50 nanometers or more) according to their size. The layered porous structure is a structure including at least two of these three kinds of pores.

Since the surface area of ​​the secondary battery is large and the substance to be transported is excellent, the layered porous structure is effective for the secondary battery. However, it is difficult to mass-produce this material because it requires a complicated procedure to simultaneously adjust different pores.

The team adjusted the solvent evaporation conditions and successfully synthesized porous inorganic materials through block copolymers and phase separation methods.

In addition to titanium cerium oxide, this technology can also be used for various inorganic materials such as tungsten or titanium oxide. The research team improved the electrolyte's ability to penetrate the electrodes, making lithium ions easier to send. As the surface area of ​​the oxidation and reduction process becomes wider, the charging speed becomes faster.

“Although layered porous inorganic materials have many advantages as energy electrode materials, due to the complicated synthesis process, they are unable to truly display the materials of science and technology,” said Professor Li Jinyu. “Through further research, we will find ways to make these The material can also improve the performance of various energy electrode materials, not just lithium ion secondary batteries."
