Port of Portsmouth, UK, "Floating Marine Trash Can"

HC Plastics News: Recently, the Port of Portsmouth in the south of England has launched a “floating marine trash can” that can “suck” plastic bottles, plastic bags, cigarette butts and other garbage from the sea.

The floating marine trash can uses a submersible pump to inhale the seawater together with the rubbish in the water, and then through a storage bag in the bucket, it intercepts all the wastes with a diameter of more than 2 mm and filters out the seawater. The storage bag can hold up to 12 kg and is replaced when it is full.

According to preliminary estimates, the garbage can collect 1.5 kilograms of waste per day, which is equivalent to collecting 20,000 plastic bottles or 83,000 plastic bags per year.

In addition, the trash can collects oil from the sea.

The inventor of the floating sea trash can is two Australian surfers who are stimulating them to develop such trash cans. They are really fed up with the plastic waste that comes from the waves.

Before being officially launched in Portsmouth, the trash can was tested in some docks around the world. During the test, the most common garbage it collected was the packaging of food such as cigarette butts, plastic chips and potato chips.

According to the estimates of the two inventors, in general, a small boat dock requires about four such floating bins to be placed in areas where sea tides and currents cause waste to accumulate.

According to data reported by Reuters, the average annual amount of plastic waste thrown into the ocean is 8 million tons, of which only 9% can be recycled. Less than 20% of the 8 million tons of plastic waste is due to human normal sea activities, such as fishing.
