Overview of agricultural and pesticide applications in the Philippines

The Philippines has a land area of 300,000 square kilometers, accounting for 2% of the world's land area , ranking 57th among the world's top 146 countries . The sea area is 276,000 square nautical miles. The Philippines has 30 million hectares of land and 47% of it is agricultural land. The main agricultural land is concentrated in cities and densely populated areas. 15.8 million hectares of forest land; 14.2 million hectares of land available, of which 93% ( 13 million hectares) are agricultural land. Among the 13 million hectares of agricultural land, it is divided into grain land, other food land and non-food land. Food land 31% (4.01 million hectares), other food sites 52% (8.33 million hectares), 17% of non-food land (2.2 million hectares).

Among the food crops, the rice planting area is the largest, and the second is corn. Rice has an annual production of 16 million tons and is produced by about 2 million small and medium-sized farms in the country . The land used for rice production is relatively fragmented. Planting of rice crops remains the main target of rural farming. In contrast, the production of 6.97 million tons of corn is more concentrated, mainly in the northern and southern parts of the Philippines.
Among the other food crops, the coconut planting area is the largest, with more than 340 million fruit trees, covering an area of 3.56 million hectares and producing about 15.5 billion coconuts per year . Sugarcane planting area is 420,000 hectares, producing about 30 million tons of sugar cane every year .
There is no agricultural production in the Philippines, and most of the agricultural resources are imported from abroad. There are only a few local manufacturers, relying on the import of raw drugs from overseas to manufacture end products. In 2011 , the use value of agrochemicals in the Philippines totaled $ 178 million. Among them, pesticides are the largest product type, with a value of $ 6,200 million. From the perspective of crops, rice has the highest value of pesticides , accounting for 33% of total pesticide consumption .

In the production of fruit plantations, the proportion of agrochemicals is the largest, and it is relatively more concentrated than the planting and dispersing of rice. Banana and pineapple acreage in 60,000 hectares and 2.5 million hectares. The Philippines is the world's second largest banana exporter and the third largest exporter of pineapples. Japan is the country’s largest importer of these two fruits. Due to their profitability, their acreage is still growing. Currently, Delmonte, Dole, Chiquita Unifrutti, Sumitomo and Lapanday are the leading fruit exporters in the Philippines.
Fruit is a crop with a large amount of pesticides. In addition to bananas and pineapples, many tropical fruits in the Philippines, such as mango, papaya, avocado, dragon fruit, durian, mangosteen, etc., are used for domestic consumption and export. Mango is the third-largest fruit in the country. export earnings of more than $ 30 million.
The consumption of pesticides on vegetables and legumes is close to that of fruits. Tomatoes, peanuts, beans, cabbage, eggplant, and onions are currently several crops with a large area and yield in the Philippines.
