The largest photovoltaic project in the Netherlands to date has allegedly obtained planning permission from local authorities.
The Dronten municipality did not object to the resolution to build a 125MW photovoltaic power plant on a 100-hectare site in Flevoland. Flevoland is an island province that opened up in the last century.
The complex includes two independent power stations, Dorhout Mees and Flevonice, developed by developers Solarfields and IB Vogt.
Solarfields said it expects two power plants to break ground in the first quarter of 2021 and that the completed project will use more than 335,000 components.
The company expects that the output power of these two projects is 118GWh, which can meet the electricity demand of nearly 34,000 households. Solarfields said the company plans to get this complex project to receive government subsidies from the SDE+ program.
The developer said that the planned 125MW installed capacity of the project set a record for the Dutch solar industry. The earlier PV record holder was a project developed by Sunport to sign a power purchase agreement with Google. The maximum installed capacity of this project is 30MW, which is significantly smaller than this project.
The progress of the Dronten project shows that the vast PV industry in the Netherlands is developing better. IRENA data show that in 2016 (2GW) to 2018 (4.15GW), the installed capacity of photovoltaics in the Netherlands has doubled.
So far, growth seems to be mainly driven by SDE + program subsidies, with a total subsidy of 6 billion euros ($6.67 billion) and the latest round of subsidies of 3.2 billion euros ($3.57 billion). Industry data shows that in the Dutch market where land is scarce and electricity is low, it will take longer to succeed on a non-subsidized basis.
