On September 8, 2015, Keithley Instruments released the "Model 2281S" (Release in English) that simulates a secondary battery. The company calls it a "battery simulator." The size of the desktop model is only 255.3mm × 107.2mm × 415.0mm, very small.

According to Keithley Instruments Japan, many engineers use actual batteries when testing secondary battery-powered devices (Figure 1). Therefore, there is a need for a variety of batteries that vary in state of charge and deterioration.

Previously, the product for battery simulation prepared by the measuring instrument manufacturers including Keithley was a DC power supply and an SMU (Source Measurement Unit), and the reproducibility was limited. For example, the output voltage of an analog battery is basically fixed.

This new product can simulate full charge to full discharge. The company claims that this is the industry's first true battery simulator. It can be used for tests using secondary battery-powered IoT devices and wearable devices.

Automatic generation of secondary battery model

This device has three operating modes (Figure 2), namely "Battery Test Mode", "Battery Simulation Mode" and "High-precision DC Power Mode". In the battery test mode, the secondary battery charge and discharge test is automatically performed and the battery model is automatically generated (Figure 3). Secondary battery charge and discharge tests measure current, voltage, battery capacity (remaining charge and charge), and internal resistance (ESR).

Figure 3: Battery test mode.

A secondary battery model will be automatically generated after the measurement (Figure 4). That is, the relationship between battery capacity, voltage, and internal resistance is organized into a table. The values in the table can be edited. In addition, the model (characteristic table) can be output in CSV format.

Figure 5: Battery Simulation Mode.

In the battery simulation mode, the behavior of the secondary battery is simulated in accordance with the model created in the battery test mode or separately created (can be read in CSV format) (Fig. 5). Can simulate with any remaining power and charge capacity. In addition, the output voltage can be changed according to the model, or it can be fixed to any value. "Meet the need to test in a specific state" (Keithley Instruments Japan).

The high-precision DC power mode performs basically the same operations as the "2280S Series" of programmable direct current power supplies with measurement functions released by Keithley about a year ago. For example, the current can be measured with a minimum resolution of 10A and a reading of 6.5 bits can be displayed. Can work as a maximum 20V, 6A DC power supply.

The new product's display is 4.3 inches with a resolution of 480 pixels x 272 pixels and can display graphics. The price without tax is 264,000 yen. (Reporter: Yutaro Kojima)
